I guess I was wrong and CNA was right

I was reading the CNA when I read this line.

The incumbent has since garnered such strong support from Singaporeans that he proved to be hard to beat, becoming the only eligible candidate for Elected President on Nomination Day. [link]

I had a "WTF?" moment for a second. Didn't Mr Nathan win as he was the only candidate because PEC only approved him?

What is this about being "hard to beat because having garnered strong support from Singaporeans". There was no race, where got chance for people to beat you?

I guess I am wrong. If its reported by Singapore news, it must be right. Right?
